Ireland's employment permits are issued by the Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment (DETE), and the authoritative rules live on enterprise.gov.ie. This course explains those rules in plain language as they stood when we last checked them (March 2026). It is guidance, not legal advice: rules, lists and salary figures change, and your own situation may have wrinkles a course cannot cover. Always verify against the official site before acting.
There are nine permit types in total, but two cover the vast majority of candidates, and those two are the focus of this course.
The CSEP exists for occupations Ireland has decided it is short of, listed on the Critical Skills Occupations List (think many ICT, engineering and health professions). In practice it is the premium route:
The GEP is the broad, flexible route. It covers any occupation that is not on the Ineligible Occupations List, which makes it the workhorse permit for roles like chefs, healthcare assistants, HGV drivers and many office roles.
The decision is made by the job, not by you: the occupation and the salary of the specific offer determine which permit applies. The same person could qualify for a CSEP with one offer and only a GEP with another. That is why lessons two and three of this module, the thresholds and the lists, are the heart of this course.
One more practical point: either you or the employer can lodge the application, but there must be a real job offer from a real Irish-registered employer first. No offer, no permit; nobody can "get you a permit" in the abstract, whatever an agent overseas may claim.
